The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced a collaborative effort with leading tech companies to launch the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot program. This initiative aims to provide researchers and educators across the nation access to advanced AI technologies, ensuring the US maintains its leading position in AI research and innovation.
Tech giants like Amazon, Anthropic, Hugging Face, IBM, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Palantir are part of this two-year pilot program. They will be joined by federal agencies such as DARPA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Department of Agriculture.
The NAIRR pilot, a product of President Biden’s AI executive order, is seen as a foundational step towards a collaborative framework between the government and the private sector for advancing AI technologies. The program is designed to democratize AI resources, which have become concentrated and less accessible, especially to smaller colleges and rural institutions. It will function as a shared national infrastructure providing the necessary hardware, models, and resources to propel the AI ecosystem.
OpenAI Drops Prices and Fixes 'Lazy' GPT-4 (🔗 link)
OpenAI has announced several updates to its models and pricing. The changes are significant for developers and hint at future directions for consumer applications. The GPT-3.5 Turbo model, widely used through ChatGPT, has seen a reduction in input and output prices.
